Users have 24/7 access to thousands of free titles from the CLAMS Virtual Library Branch

Hyannis, Massachusetts – December 17th,  2010 – CLAMS (Cape Libraries Automated Materials Sharing) has expanded its download collection with the addition of OverDrive’s Project Gutenberg eBook collection at clamsnet.lib.overdrive.com. From the comfort of home, card holders can browse the collection and download free eBooks and more anytime, anywhere.

gutenpressCLAMS’s Project Gutenberg collection features more than 15,000 public domain EPUB titles including classics by Jane Austen and Charles Dickens.

This new collection enables users to discover and download thousands of free eBooks without holds, waitlists, or authentication. The titles can be read in any EPUB-compatible software, such as Adobe® Digital Editions, and transferred to EPUB-capable eBook readers such as the Sony® Reader, the Kobo (Borders),  and the Barnes & Noble nook™. Starting in January 2011(date to be announced), patrons will be able to use CLAMS ebooks on the iPad. eBooks downloaded from the Project Gutenberg collection don’t expire or count against a patron’s checkout limit.

“eBooks are growing in popularity.  With the rise in eReader sales this holiday season, we are excited to offer an even larger selection of eBooks through Project Gutenberg, in addition to our existing collection of best-selling content”, said Eileen Chandler, Member Services Manager at CLAMS.

To check out eBooks, audiobooks, or music from the Virtual Branch, users need a valid library card, computer, and Internet connection. Once downloaded, digital media can be enjoyed on a computer or transferred to popular devices such as eReaders and iPods® and more. At the end of the lending period, titles automatically expire and are returned to the collection. All eBooks in the Virtual Branch may also be returned early. Digital Downloads through CLAMS are available from home or while on the go using a Smart Phone.

CLAMS partners with OverDrive, Inc., a global leader in digital media services, to offer the download service.
